The Loboc Youth Ambassador Band is a poverty alleviation project of LYEA Inc. to help young Lobocanons finish degree courses. LYEA trains children starting Grade III to 4th year high school in notes reading and instrumentation for free and is provided with free musical instruments, solicited from patrons and donors. These young boys and girls perform in shows and concerts upon invitation of clients to generate income for purchase of uniforms and additional instruments.

The recent support of UB extended to young boholanos is part of its continuing corporate social responsibility. The school through the UB Community Development Foundation, Inc. also made various interventions to different LGUs in the province on poverty reduction intitiatives.

UB stockholders elect new trustees; New president go for excellence

Stockholders of the University of Bohol (formerly Rafael Palma College) elected the new members of the Board of Trustees for administrative year 2010-2011, during the annual stockholders meeting held last September 24, 2010 at the university Instructional Media Center (IMC).

In an election held, the new members of the Board of Trustees are: Dr. Jes. B. Tirol, Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr., Atty. Ulysses B. Tirol, Atty. David B. Tirol, Mrs. Asuncion A. Mira, Dr. Lumin T. Pamaran, Dr. Cristeta B. Tirol, Atty. Nuevas T. Montes, Mrs. Amparo B. CastaƱeda and Mrs. Fe G. Icamen. The members of the board in a separate election, unanimously elected Atty. Victoriano T. Tirol, Jr., as president and Dr. Jes B. Tirol as chairman of the board.
In his report to the stockholders, UB President Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr., disclosed the increase in enrolment in the first semester this school year amidst the impact of global financial crisis. Inspite of the consistent academic performance in producing board, bar and other licensure examination passers and topnotchers, Tirol reported the continuous upgrading in the quality of instruction and physical plant facilities. With the recent achievements of the students in the regional, national and international competitions and events , the university president described a vibrant student community in the campus. In his address, Tirol announced the official invitation of the Japanese government to Dr. Janice B. Tirol, SPS Dean, as facilitator in the 2010 Ship for South East Asian Youth Program (SSYEAP) on the topic School Education in the ASEAN-Japan countries. He also noted the forging of a memorandum of understanding between Kyungin Women’s College in Korea and the University of Bohol. UB hosted two batches of English Language Training Program from June to August with 60 Korean students participating and 30 UB students coaching the foreign students individually.
On the aspect of corporate social responsibility, Pres. Tirol mentioned the community services of the university extended to the LGU’s of Sevilla, Loboc, Bilar, Alburquerque, San Isidro and Sagbayan, in offering long term poverty-reduction initiatives. With funding from different LGU stakeholders , Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, the UP Institute of Biological Science and the Philippine Australia Community Assistance Program, the UB Community Foundation Inc. (UBCDFI) chaired by Dr. Gloria T. Casabal, implemented various projects amounting to Ph8,657,246.84. The school also won the Green Philippines Awards sponsored by the National Youth Commission (NYC), for maintaining the 8 hectare marine sanctuary at Biking, Dauis.

With the students of Physical Therapy and Allied Medical Sciences, the school integrated a community based rehabilitation program to give free services to indigents. It also tied up with STAC (Stimulation Therapeutic Activity Center) to give free rehabilitation services to its clients who are differently-abled.
All throughout the country, only the University of Bohol has tied up with the Department of Justice-Parole and Probation Administration in achieving the Therapeutic Community Modality Projects. In cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Foundation in Tagbilaran City, the UB Family also awarded 2 rows of houses in Tangnan, Panglao to the families of blind beneficiaries through the Sweat Equity Program.
On the same meeting, the UB president personally handed to Emer Joy T. Vale, cash award from the university for placing 7th in the recent licensure examination for nurses. The College of Nursing through Dean Isabelita Margate received appreciation from the stockholders for producing 207 new nurses.

In closing , Atty. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr. called on the stockholders to move forward in offering quality education at all levels and at all cost. “ To maintain academic prestige and respect, the University’s thrust should always be quality education. All other considerations are only secondary. Let us not rest on our laurels and be contended by the glorious years of the past. Instead, we work harder and fast as we owe this to the people who entrusted the lives of their children to our care ”, says Atty. Tirol. Quoting Saint Paul in his letter to the Galatians, the university president encouraged the owners of the university: “let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we shall reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9).
To date, UB is now 64 years old; 25 years as a college and 39 years as a University. It gained university recognition on December 11, 1971. Next academic year the institution will celebrate its Ruby Jubilee.
