UB Youth Band organized

For a period of time, the University of Bohol finally revived its band with the new batch of young and talented students taking the helm.

Coming from the well known Loboc Youth Band, the thirty student members are enrolled in the school as scholars. This is an offshoot of the special project entered into between the University of Bohol through its president, Atty. David B. Tirol and Mr. Argeo Melisimo, President, Loboc Youth Band Foundation, Inc. in their desire to help the young band members finish their courses through their God-given talent.

It may be recalled that the Loboc Youth Band played in full group during the 136th Commencement Exercises and during the UB christmas program . With its band leader, Mr. Balbin, the band performed at par with the leading national bands. . No more than the university president, Atty. David Tirol committed 30 scholarship slots to its members which was strongly approved by the Board of Trustess.

Food court soon to open

A 2.5 million worth food court is soon to open right at the university main campus as an added facility for students.

The new food court with polycarbonate roofing is an open air and environmentally design to create an outdoor effect though you are in-door. Customers can select variety of foods and drinks at the nearby stalls at very affordable prices and experience the natural ambience while taking their meals or snacks.

Designed by Archt. El Cid Tirol of Rock Built Architects and Associates, the new facility is strategically located near the treasurer and registrar office where much of the transactions take place. Two leading banks have already signified their plans to put up their own ATMs adjacent to the food court to provide access to students and other employees to their accounts.

It may be recalled that the University of Bohol had recently provided to her students a new student lounge with cable television set and a mini-hotel and skills training laboratory for THM students.

Boholana is nat’l BYEE finalist

Marie Nickie Bolos, a fourth year BS Computer Science student of the University of Bohol and a resident of Barangay Biking, Dauis, Bohol is adjudged recently as one of the twelve national finalists of Bayer Young Environmental Envoys for 2008 (BYEE).

As BYEE finalist, the young boholana will implement a project consisting of 500
X 200 meter marine sanctuary in Barangay Biking. The project duration is three months beginning June 10 to September 9, 2008. Should this project be adjudged as one of the top four projects, Bolos will be given an all expenses paid educational tour to Germany on November 11-8, 2008.

The project advisers include Mrs. Jean Cirunay, Science Area Coordinator, Dr. Lino Garsuta, CWTS Coordinator, Mrs. Gina Lopena, Community Extension Services Officer, and Dean Nomi Pamaran- Cañuto, Student Personnel Services.

The selection of Bayer Young Environmental Envoys – 2008 is a joint initiative of Bayer and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

VP admin leads outreach prom

Lawyer Nuevas Tirol-Montes, former vice mayor of the City of Tagbilaran, and incumbent vice president for administration of the University of Bohol, lead the non-academic personnel in a community outreach activity through mangrove planting at Maribojoc last September 17, 2008.

A total of six hundred propagules were planted by the group near the Maribojoc port to help the LGU rehabilitate its mangroves .The activity is in line with the celebration of the UB Days and is part of the community extension services of the school. Others in attendance were Leah Tirol- Magno, school registrar, Gina Lopena, community extension services officer, Leo Boncales, public relations officer, Gody Bigcal, property custodian, Edgar Belarmino, procurement officer and other department heads and employees.

UBUE conducts self defense training

The University of Bohol Union of Employees (UBUE) is now conducting training for professionals and students on the basic self defense at the UB Fitness Gymn.

UB CWTS joins Milo marathon, bags awards

The University of Bohol Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS) had recently joined the 32nd Milo Marathon last September 7, 2008 at the City of Tagbilaran.

1Lt. Lino N. Garsuta, CWTS Coordinator bared that the group bagged the championship award as the biggest delegation and placed second runner-up in the inter-school running competition.

In a related development, the UB CWTS in coordination with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) also conducted a blood typing project to university students. It also forged partnership with the Philippine Army and the PNRC in a blood donation project.

UB and LGU- Maribojoc ink MOA on eco-tourism project

The University of Bohol and the local government unit of Maribojoc recently entered into a memorandum of agreement on eco-tourism project of the municipality.

In a fitting ceremony held at Maribojoc municipal hall last July 31, 2008 , Atty David B. Tirol, University President and Mayor Leoncio Evasco, Jr. of the Municipality of Maribojoc formally signed the memorandum of agreement concerning the Bulok-Bulok Spring Development Project at Sitio Cayaman, Barangay Jandig, Maribojoc, Bohol.

Under the agreement, both institutions aim to transform the Bulok-Bulok spring from a mere source of water into an Eco-Adventure Site. The project is designed to help uplift the economy of local residents thru various income generating activities relative to the eco-adventure project, and to promote an environment-conscious eco-tourism for Maribojoc.

The community involvement projects in Maribojoc is under the auspices of the University of Bohol Community Development Project Incorporated (UBCDFI) chaired by Dr. Gloria T. Casabal, Civic Welfare Training Service headed by Lt. Lino Garsuta and Community Extension Services Office headed by Mrs. Gina Lopena.

To note, the university has been doing good in bridging the school to the communities. At present eight communities in the towns of Bilar, Sevilla, Loboc and Maribojoc have been served. with funding grants from the Philippine Australian Community Assistance Project. (PACAP).

Stude places 4th in nat’l tourism quiz

Juvern Cancio, a fourth year student of the University of Bohol College of Tourism/Hospitality Management , recently won fourth place during the 3rd National Tourism Congress Quiz Bee Competition held at Olongapo Convention Center, Olongapo City last August 27-30, 2008.

Dean Maria Asuncion Laxa-Bersabal of the College of Tourism/Hospitality Management bared, that the university had sent an official student delegation headed by Charles Juico, college instructor, to participate on the said tourism congress and to compete with the other twenty three participating schools nationwide in the different skills competitions. The University of Bohol College of Tourism is an active member of the Union of Filipino Tourism Educators . The congress was highlighted with the presence of Philippine Tourism Authority General Manager Mark T. Lapid and Mrs. Zenaida L. Cruz, a leading author and educator in tourism. This year’s theme is “Global Trends and Challenges”.

To note, the college had recently acquire a new mini-hotel and a skills training laboratory.

Mr BSN, Miss CBA reign as UB Personalities ‘08

The reigning Mr. and Miss UB Personality ’08, Carlo Roy Roslinda and Mylene Pedroso receiving a one year scholarship award from the University of Bohol. Miss Luane Pamaran principal of the UB grades school assisted the awarding.

Mr and Miss UB Personality ’08 with the 1st runners up Julios Genita and Richiel Ann Banluta and 2nd runners up Nigel Atuel and Yoon Ji Park.


The most awaited search for Mr. and Miss UB Personality 2008 has finally come to end with the declaration of winners after the search night held at the UB quadrangle last September l8.

Carlo Roy Roslinda of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Mylene Pedroso of the College of Business Accountancy (CBA) bested other contestants to claim the title as Mr. and Miss UB Personality 2008. Before the jampacked crowd the announcement was greeted with warm applause and cheers as both Roslinda and Pedroso are the crowd ‘s favorite even during the talent night.

Bagging the 1st runners up are Julios Genita of the College of Tourism/Hospitality Management and Richiel Ann Banluta of the College of Nursing. Nigel Atuel of the College of Pharmacy and Yoon Ji Park of the Day High School Department ended as 2nd runners up.

Engr. Jes Tirol: 1st boholano geotechnical and structural engineering

Engr. Jes B. Tirol, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and concurrent Director of Planning and Research of the University of Bohol, was formally conferred the title of Specialist in both Geotechnical and Structural Engineering by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers. Inc.(PICE)- Specialty Division for Geotechnical and Structural Engineering,
The formal confirmation was given last June 20, 2008 , at Quezon City Philippines by Engr, Emilio M. Morales, Chair of Specialty Division for Geotechnical Engineering , Engr. Ernesto S. De Castro, Ph.D., Chair, Specialty Division of Structural Engineering, Engr. Efren H. Sison, Past President and Chair, Inter-Specialty Group and PICE National President Engr. Willy T. Go.

A former Dean of the UB College of Engineering , Engr. Jes Tirol finished his Associate in Surveying (With Honors), Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (Cum Laude) and AB Major in Mathematics (Cum Laude) at Rafael Palma College. He completed his Masters in Engineering (Major in Structural and Geotechnical Engineering) at the University of the Philippines and his Masters in Business Administration (Cum Laude), Master of Arts in History ( Magna Cum Laude) and Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Benemeritus) at the University of Bohol. In 2007, he finished his doctoral degree in Technological Management (Benemeritus) at CVSCAFT-Tagbilaran.

Engr. Tirol , is a member of the Earthquake Engineers Research Institute, California, USA; American Society of Civil Engineers, Reston. Virginia, USA; and National Center of Earthquake Engineering Research, Buffalo, New York. He is a life-time member of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), member of Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines (GEP), and Technological Education of the Philippines.

To note, of the almost one hundred thousand civil engineers in the country Engr. Jes Tirol is the 19th specialist in geotechnical and 110th specialist in structural engineering. The “specialist “ recognition of the PICE is equivalent to diplomate for physician.

Aside from being a professional engineer, Tirol is an author of various engineering and history books, and a writer-columnist of the Bohol Chronicle, by- line “Sundry Chronicle”: Bohol’s Pride, by-line “Jestory”: and Bohol Express, by-line “Pagtukib sa Binisaya”. He is a protegee of his father, the late Atty. Victoriano D. Tirol, Sr. who is a true blooded LUDABIan.

CBA rules in sports competition

The College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) was adjudged champion during the nine day sports competition held at the CPG Sports Complex and UB quadrangle and gymnasium.

Garnering a total number of 3,990 points ,CBA lead the College of Nursing with 3,870 points ,copping the 1st runner up and the College of Criminology as 2nd runner up with 3,710 points.

UB produces new electrical engrs. and master electrician

The University of Bohol College of Engineering and Technology, had produced new electrical engineers and a master electrician who successfully passed in a separate board examinations given last September 2008.

Engr. Liberato H. Lupot, Jr., dean of the College of Engineering and Technology, disclosed the names of the new electrical engineers as follows: Engr. Expedito V. Cadeliña and Engr. Mario C. Genson, and new Master Electrician Mark Anthony G. Pingkian

Two in a row

The University of Bohol College of Education cheer dance group proved that they could groove well in the dance floor as they bagged separate honors in two interschool cheer dance competitions.

In September 21, this year, the group landed on the 3rd place during the interschool dance competition sponsored by the Island City Mall. On the same vein, last September 21, the same group bagged the 2nd place in the Dunkin Donut sponsored cheer dance competition held at BQ Mall atrium and was awarded as “Best in Cheer Leading”.

Dean Carol Belarmino, college dean, together with the faculty and education students lauded the cheer dancers for the job well done.
