UB EVP is TOBAW awardee

Dr. Victoriano B. Tirol, Jr., executive vice president and chief operation officer of the University of Bohol was recently awarded as one of The Outstanding Boholanos Around the World (TOBAW 2009) in the field of education, during the awarding rites held last July 25, 2009 at the Dagohoy Grand Ballroom, Bohol Tropics Resort, this city.
The prestigious award is aimed at giving public recognition to Boholanos who have manifested exemplary competence in their fields of endeavor and whose community and humanitarian involvement have significantly contributed to the Boholano community and the world. TOBAW is given every three (3) years and is a project of Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan, the Province of Bohol, and the First Consolidated Bank, with the cooperation of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, Bohol Chronicle and Radio Station DYRD, and the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 
Born in Buenavista, Bohol, Dr. Will Tirol (as fondly called by the members of the UB family) obtained his six masters degrees and two Ph.D. degrees from the University of Bohol, University of Santo Thomas and Silliman University. He is married to Dr. Cristeta Balili-Tirol and blessed with two sons Victoriano Tirol III and Will Tyron.
As a lawyer and educator by profession, Dr. Tirol served for many years as schools division superintendent and regional director of the Department of Education until his retirement. As national president of the Philippine Public School Teachers, Employees Association (PPSTEA), Tirol initiated the amendment of the Magna Carta for Public Schools. Dr. Tirol founded Cristal e College, Informatics Computer Institute Bohol, and Galeria Ventures (a computer school) in Quezon City

Gov. Aumentado grace RPC/UB alumni homecoming

Governor Erico Boyles-Aumentado of the Province of Bohol and an alumnus of the University of Bohol (formerly Rafael Palma College) had attended the UB Grand Alumni Homecoming held last July 20, 2009, at the university quadrangle.

Along with other alumni who were in attendance, the governor described the affair as very memorable one with the proud graduates gathered back in their alma mater with their respective responsibilities in the government and private sectors. In retrospect, Gov. Aumentado recalled his student days as a working scholar of the RPC registrar’s office, editor-in-chief of the RP Collegian, president of the RPC Junior Republic and an active leader in other school organizations. To note, Aumentado became chairman of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP). Inc. Eastern Visayas, defeating Satur Ocampo (now Bayan Muna representative) who was then a budding journalist during the time. According to the governor, his political leaning was nurtured in campus politics. The governor likewise attributed his achievements as public servant to the virtues that the school had firmly instilled in the minds of the students namely, scholarship, character and service. Records showed that in Bohol majority of the professionals working and holding vital positions in the government and private entities are from the University of Bohol. As the university’s punch line goes,”Study in UB, where students today become leaders tomorrow”.

RPC/UB alumni converge tomorrow

The graduates of then Rafael Palma College (RPC) and the University of Bohol (UB) will gather tomorrow, Monday, July 20, 2009 in celebration of the school’s grand alumni homecoming to be held at the university quadrangle.

Alumni from around the world have already confirmed their attendance to the occasion to reminisce their college days in their alma mater with their batch members and school mates. UB President David B. Tirol, Alumni President Jose V. Torralba, members of the board of trustees, deans and department heads will lead the UB family in welcoming the alumni.

A business meeting and election of officers of the UB Alumni Association Inc. (UBAAI) will take place at 9 a.m. at the Institutional Research Center (IRC) auditorium while the registration will start at 4 p.m. at the Founders’ Hall lobby. Different souvenir and novelty items will be displayed and exhibits featuring memorabilia of both RPC and UB days will be showcased at the ground floor of the Diamond Jubilee Hall (College of Nursing Building). At 6 p.m., the alumni will be treated with a fellowship dinner to be followed by a program. A live band is set to perform the “oldies but goodies“ songs ,play tunes for the ball room dancing and provide accompaniment to those who wish to sing . Lots of fun and surprises await the alumni at their very own alma mater on this date.

This years theme for the homecoming is “UB Cruising Around the World Reconnect Reunite Reminisce .“ The affair will coincide with the holding of the “Tigum Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan” (TBTK) and the Sandugo celebration.

UB, BJMP and PPA ink memos

The University of Bohol represented by its president Atty. David B. Tirol have recently entered into and memorandum of undertaking and agreement with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Region VII and the Parole and Probation Administration (PPA)-Bohol Cluster respectively, last July 13, 2009.

In two separate occasions on the same date, UB President David Tirol first signed the memorandum of undertaking with BJMP represented by J/C Supt. Doris Remedios-Dorigo, CEO VII, on Academic Engagement with BJMPO VII. Primarily ,both parties take cognizance of the social responsibilities and the need to extend assistance to those who are behind bars. The objectives of the program include custodial services/searching services, paralegal services, case follow up, health care/health teaching, tutorials, technical knowledge transfer, and counseling/case management. The University of Bohol and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology are confident that the program could be an effective mechanism in giving inmates their basic rights to education and speedy disposition of their cases, with the end view of making them better persons upon their return into the mainstream of society.

In a related development, the University of Bohol also entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Parole and Probation Administration (PPA)-Bohol Cluster, Region VII on Therapeutic Community Modality for Parolees and Probationers Project to be implemented under Bohol Cluster. The project is an expansion of the communities served from Bohol PPA Office II based in Tubigon, Bohol. The primordial purpose of the project is the promotion of human and social transformation among the probationers and parolees. Atty. David Tirol represented UB while Asst. Regional Director Al C. Cainglet,RD1, Region VII represented the PPA-Bohol Cluster during the signing of the agreement.

Both projects are part of the continuing commitment of the University of Bohol in community extension services in the province.

UB host CHED forum and 3rd CEVISRA reg’l consultation

The University of Bohol recently hosted the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) regional forum on the new Manual of Regulations for Private Higher Education and the 3^rd Central Visayas School Registrar’s Association (CEVISRA) regional consultative assembly last July 9-10, 2009 at the Institutional Research Center (IRC) of the university.

The forum which was participated in by the deans and school registrars from private higher education institutions in the region is focused on the highlights of the new manual of regulations as embodied in CHED Memorandum Order 40, series of 2008. Dr. Amelia A. Biglete, CHED director, Region VII was the keynote speaker. Other resource speakers include Atty. Julito D. Vitriolo, Executive Director, CHED; Charlie V. Calimlim, OIC-Director III, CHED; and Atty. Ulpiano “Ulan” Sarmiento, ESQ., education lawyer. On the same development, the school registrars and assistant registrars from private higher education institutions in Region VII also conducted their annual workshop on Higher Education Management Information System (HEMIS).

UB President David B. Tirol, the incumbent regional president of the Regional Association of Higher Education Institutions (RAHEI 7), Region VII, welcomed the guests and participants of the regional gathering.

The theme of the regional forum is “Quality functions for quality service “.

DBT welcome new studes

Lawyer David B. Tirol, president of the University of Bohol warmly welcomed the new students of the university during the general orientation program held at the school’s gymnasium last July 9, 2009.

Before the jam-packed crowd, Pres. Tirol lauded the students for having wise and correct decision in choosing UB as their institution of learning. According to Tirol, the University of Bohol has been and always dedicated to the foremost interest and benefits of the students. “UB existS for the students and not students exist for UB”, the president added.

On the same vein, Atty. Tirol categorically mentioned Ann Crusit, a graduate of the college of education who is selected recently by Malacañang as one of the ten outstanding students of the Philippines. He attributed the success of Crusit to the high quality performance of the faculty and the support of the University of Bohol administration. It may be recalled that within this school year, the university added feathers on her cap when six students also bagged honors, namely: Marie Nikki Bolos, Bayer young environmental envoy to Germany and regional finalist in the search for ten outstanding students of the Philippines; John Ray Rodriguez and Lalaine Dahao, student ambassadors to Japan; JP Piquero, awardee, AYALA Youth Leaders of the Philippines; Lucille Saniel, Bohol representative to the National Youth Camp on Gender Sexuality; and Rudalyn Horolan, 3^rd placer- Civil Service Sub-professional -Paper and Pencil Test, regional level.

New pharmacists bared

The University of Bohol College of Pharmacy had added her list of pharmacists when thirteen of her graduates successfully hurdled the June 2009 pharmacists licensure examination.

In an interview, Dean Eva B. Campeciño disclosed the complete list of the new passers as follows: Nomi R. Aparece, Booy District, Tagbilaran City; Marlou Q. To note, the University of Bohol is the only institution in the province of Bohol offering Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSPharm).

UB educ. hold 19th pinning, candle lighting and tribute to parents

The University of Bohol, College of Education, held its 19^th pinning, candle lighting and tribute to parents last June 19, 2009, at the university gymnasium.

With the theme, “The challenging role of teachers in the current trends in education”, Dr. Maria Luisa Clet, guest speaker, stressed the vital role of teachers to develop the knowledge and skills of the students. Dr. Clet also emphasized the multi-faceted personality of the teacher to face the current challenges of the profession as: manager, motivator, leader, model, surrogate parent, social catalyst, facilitator/instru ctor, and guidance counselor. “If a teacher learns to love his children, then he will surely learn to love teaching”, Clet added. On the other hand, Dr. Ricardo Bullecer, supervisor of BEED and BSED teacher trainees , presented the forty one candidates for internship to Dean Carolina Belarmino who in turn took recognition and acceptance of the candidates.

During the candle lighting ceremony, Atty. David B. Tirol, university president, personally led the lighting of the candle which was passed on to the candidates. In his inspirational message, Atty. Tirol emphasized the developed mind as the key to development and progress. He likewise encouraged the students to continue learning and to explore the world of knowledge that awaits us all. As university president, Tirol expressed pride and gratefulness to the parents, for entrusting the educational development of their children to the University of Bohol.

A memorable part followed when the candidates offered roses as tribute to their beloved parents.

The occasion was attended by the members of the board of trustees, faculty and students.
